Thomas S. Szatkowski is a founder of Northeast Intellectual Property. With over 20 years as in house intellectual property counsel at a major pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, Tom has a strategic in house counsel perspective and a wide range of experience with all aspects of pharmaceutical, biotechnology and vaccine IP law.
Tom began working in pharmaceutical and biotech IP law with a predecessor company of Wyeth and eventually became Vice President, Wyeth Research and Assistant General Counsel, IP, managing the IP law group at Wyeth’s Cambridge, MA location. There, Tom was responsible for devising IP strategies and guiding the preparation and prosecution of the IP portfolios for many development track and commercial pharmaceutical, biotechnology and vaccine candidates and products. Tom has a first hand understanding of the IP challenges inherent in collaborations, having served as the presiding Wyeth representative on several joint IP committees. Tom’s extensive experience ranges from patent drafting and prosecution to patent term extension and listing, research use safe harbor, licensing, opinions, IP diligence, and freedom to operate analysis. Tom also has significant experience managing patent litigation, both in the United States as well as in multiple ex-US jurisdictions.
When Pfizer acquired Wyeth in 2009, Tom was selected to manage the integration of 15 IP attorneys from four sites at Wyeth and Pfizer into a new group serving part of a reorganized Pfizer research unit.
Prior to working in pharmaceutical and biotech IP law, Tom worked as a litigation associate at Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett in Boston and Cravath, Swaine and Moore in New York.
